Head first. A bearded dragon's throat carries rows of soft spines that flare into a wide, dark half-circle when the animal puffs up, and the head is broad and triangular with spiny rows running back along the jaw. Art that draws a smooth-throated brown lizard with a friendly grin has drawn some generic agamid and slapped a name on it. Check the flanks too. Those lateral spine rows run the length of the body, not just around the neck.
Eyelids or no eyelids?
This one separates leopard geckos from crested geckos in about two seconds. Leos have working eyelids and blink. Cresteds don't, which is why they lick their own eyes, and they carry that fringe of crests running from above each eye down the back. A crested gecko drawn mid-blink is a leopard gecko wearing the wrong name. Same check catches gargoyles and chahouas, since the crest structure differs on all three.
Do the feet make sense for the animal?
Feet get skipped constantly and they're the fastest tell. Gecko toe pads are ridged with lamellae, not suction cups, and day geckos, cresteds, and leos all have different toe structure from each other. Chameleons run zygodactyl, two toes fused one way and three the other, built to grip a branch, plus a prehensile tail and eyes that move independently. A chameleon drawn with flat spread-out toes and both eyes pointed forward is a lizard-shaped guess.
Where's the tegu?
Tegus and monitors get treated as one animal, and they aren't close. An Argentine black and white tegu is bulky through the jowls, banded in high-contrast rows, and carries a heavy tail with no keel to it. A savannah monitor's head runs longer and narrower with a rounder snout, and a water monitor's tail is laterally flattened for swimming. Both groups have forked tongues, which alone rules out the iguana that half these designs are secretly based on.

FAQ
Do the designs cover specific morphs or just the base animal?
Both, depending on the design. Where a morph is named on the shirt, the coloring and pattern are drawn to that morph, so a tangerine leopard gecko doesn't come out the same orange as a hypo. Where no morph is named, the artwork stays with wild-type coloring.
Are hatchlings drawn differently than adults?
Yes, where the animal actually changes. Leopard geckos hatch banded and break into spots as they grow, so a spotted hatchling is wrong on sight. Green iguanas start brighter and dull down with age. A shrunken adult is not a baby.
My chameleon changes color constantly. Which version got drawn?
The calm one, usually. Display coloring on a fired-up male veiled or panther is a specific state, not the default, so a design showing peak color says so. Anyone who's watched theirs go dark and grumpy at the vet knows the difference.
Do the designs work for someone who keeps snakes or crocodilians?
Those have their own pages. Nothing here gets stretched across a whole other order just to widen the audience.
Do I have to keep one to wear one?
No. Plenty of people buying these have never had a lizard in the house. Buying a shirt for an animal that will never know it exists is a normal thing to do here.
